Akon’s $6 Billion ‘Wakanda-Inspired’ city in Africa reportedly abandoned

by Showafrica July 10, 2025 1465 0 Comment

Plans for Akon City, a $6 billion futuristic development proposed by singer Akon in Senegal, have been reportedly abandoned by Senegalese authorities after years of delays and limited progress.

Akon, born in the United States to Senegalese parents, is a globally recognised singer, songwriter, and entrepreneur. He spent part of his childhood in Senegal and has been involved in various philanthropic and business ventures across Africa, including renewable energy projects and the launch of his digital currency.

Serigne Mamadou Mboup, head of the Senegalese tourism authority Sapco, confirmed the decision, stating, “The Akon City project no longer exists.” The project, first announced in 2018, was intended to create a high-tech, eco-friendly city powered by renewable energy and Akon’s cryptocurrency, Akoin.

Project Halted After Missed Milestones

Akon City gained international attention for its futuristic designs, which drew comparisons to the fictional city of Wakanda from Marvel’s Black Panther. A 2020 launch ceremony marked the beginning of the project, but by mid-2024, only a single unfinished reception hall stood on the site.

Local leaders voiced disappointment over the lack of development, as the area remained largely unchanged despite initial promises of job creation and economic growth.

The project’s reliance on Akoin became a central challenge, as the cryptocurrency struggled in the market and failed to gain acceptance from Senegalese regulators. The CFA franc remains the only legal currency in Senegal, with the Central Bank of West African States raising concerns over the use of digital currencies.

Efforts to secure the necessary $6 billion in funding fell short, and missed payments led to an ultimatum from Sapco requiring progress on the site. Authorities and Akon later agreed to discontinue the original project in favor of a more modest plan.

Akon publicly stated: “It wasn’t being managed properly—I take full responsibility for that.”

Senegalese officials confirmed that future development on the site would proceed in partnership with Akon under a revised approach. The land remains designated for potential projects, with development plans expected to align with the country’s preparations for the 2026 Youth Olympic Games.

Back in 2024, Akon went viral with his ‘Beautiful Day’ challenge on TikTok where users could win a video call with the rapper himself.
