First Look: The Magical Kingdom of Orïsha Comes to Life in Stunning ‘Children of Blood and Bone’ Images
The wait is finally over for fans of African-inspired epic fantasy. Paramount Pictures has officially unveiled the highly anticipated first-look images for the live-action adaptation of Tomi Adeyemi’s bestselling 2018 YA novel, Children of Blood and Bone. Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Woman King), who co-wrote the screenplay alongside Adeyemi, the visuals promise a cinematic experience that is both culturally rich and jaw-droppingly epic.
Set to hit theaters and IMAX screens on January 15, 2027, these exclusive stills give us a vibrant glimpse into the fictional kingdom of Orïsha, where magic has been violently suppressed by a ruthless monarchy.
A Cinematic Feast Rooted in West African Mythology
The first-look images showcase an absolute masterclass in world-building and costume design, heavily influenced by Yoruba mythology and West African traditions. From elaborate royal throne rooms to sweeping, otherworldly desert landscapes featuring vivid pink waters, the production value is undeniably massive.
Costume designer Charlese Antoinette Jones has clearly brought her A-game, blending traditional African aesthetics with fantasy armor. Highlights from the images include characters sporting ornate warrior attire complete with lion-inspired masks, and royal garments featuring deep, regal reds and intricately woven textures.

A Powerhouse, All-Star Black Cast
If the visuals alone aren’t enough to get you excited, the ensemble cast bringing this story to life is nothing short of legendary. The new images give us our first real look at the film’s principal characters:
- Thuso Mbedu (The Woman King) commands the screen as Zélie Adebola, a fierce young Diviner on a perilous quest to restore magic to her people.
- Tosin Cole steps into the role of Zélie’s brother, Tzain.
- Amandla Stenberg and Damson Idris play the royal siblings, Princess Amari and Prince Inan, who form an unlikely alliance with Zélie.
The supporting lineup reads like an award-season dream team. The newly released stills feature a commanding Viola Davis as Mama Agba, training a group of young women in staff combat. We also get glimpses of Chiwetel Ejiofor as the brutal King Saran and Regina King as Queen Nehanda looking regal in a lavish throne room.
Rounding out this powerhouse cast are Idris Elba as Lekan, Cynthia Erivo as Commander Kaea, and Lashana Lynch as Jumoke.
The Journey to the Big Screen
Bringing Children of Blood and Bone to life has been a long journey, with principal photography wrapping in Lagos. While exclusive footage was previously teased to industry insiders at CinemaCon earlier this year, these images mark the very first official promotional materials released to the public.
Despite some behind-the-scenes production chatter and discussions surrounding the adaptation, the sheer scale of the action-packed sequences, rich cultural aesthetic, and unmatched star power position this film to be a massive cultural milestone—reminiscent of the impact of Black Panther.
With the film set to premiere in January 2027, this initial look ensures that a full public trailer can’t be too far behind. Stay tuned to ShowAfrica as we continue to bring you updates on this groundbreaking Afro-fantasy epic.
