It is no wonder that this country is on the top of most people’s bucket list – it is certainly a destination that should be visited at least once in a lifetime.

This is not a long list of travel activities that you frequently see on the internet. We don’t want to overwhelm you with numerous things to do in Tanzania and make your choice difficult. On the contrary, we have selected some of the most adventurous spots to allow you to experience a different Tanzania. Selecting one or two of these activities will enhance your Tanzania vacation itinerary for the better.

  1. Ruaha & Katavi Secret SafarisWhen looking for the best things to do in Tanzania, you cannot miss out on the hidden gems within this country. Ruaha and Katavi are national parks known as ideal spots for secret safaris. If you really want to take your trip to the next level, exploring these spots is a must. Ruaha is a classic safari spot with diverse options for camping. The scenery is amazing, and the wildlife is incredibly versatile. In addition, the landscapes are breathtaking, so the national park offers a thrilling adventure for real safari fanatics. Ruaha is located in the southern circuit of Tanzania which is relatively close to Zanzibar Island. For those who want to make their Tanzania vacation a combination of beach and adventure, then this is the place you are looking for.Katavi is another secret safari spot with spectacular landscapes and miraculous surroundings. It is located in East Africa, and it’s not considered a popular place among tourists – yet. This hidden gem isn’t accessible other than by light aircraft and encompasses only three safari camps. If you want your adventure to be unique and authentic, Katavi is a great place to include in your Tanzania vacation itinerary. Since not many people know about it and with the national park being difficult to access, you will be able to enjoy your safari exclusively.

2. Rubondo / Noah’s Ark

When exploring authentic things to do in Tanzania, ensure to include Rubondo Island in your Tanzania holiday. This amazing island is known for being a sanctuary for animals that are in danger of extinction. Rubondo is located in northwest Tanzania, often referred to as Noah’s Ark. This name originates from the fact that the island camp is placed in a water-bound protected area inhabited by animals you do not regularly see. Some of them you might not even know exist.

Rubondo is known as one of the most authentic things to do in Tanzania, especially if you are looking for an adventure with a difference. Visitors of the island have the chance to explore the majestic surroundings and tropical forest landscapes whilst enjoying its beautiful trekking trails and observing its variety of animals. The most exciting thing about Rubondo is that it allows visitors to observe chimpanzees from a very close proximity. It is a unique activity that will provide you with an exceptional experience as well as unforgettable memories.

3. Unguja Ukuu Island

Making a list of the best things to do in Tanzania includes visiting the spectacular Unguja Ukuu Island. It is rarely visited by tourists and is one of the two islands that compose Zanzibar Archipelago. If you want an island that offers solitude then Unguja Ukuu is the destination for you.

You can reach this secluded island only by boat. Enjoy this enticing location brimming with flora and fauna, its true village life and unique lifestyle. When visiting the island, prepare yourself to taste the genuine delights of tropical fruits and freshly prepared fish. Plus, you can opt to visit its small village with a local guide and hear stories, its history and animals that reside there.

Unguja Ukuu is the ideal place for those who want to escape the tourist crowds and want to explore something completely authentic. Whether you choose to spend the day relaxing at the beach or diving into its waters – you will have an experience like no other.

4. Mahale Mountains National Park

The Mahale Mountains National Park is not on our list of authentic things to do in Tanzania by accident. This spectacular park is found on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika, and it is a place full of miraculous natural treasures.

Its surroundings are purely breathtaking, enticing you to get lost in its amazing forest slopes to authentically connect with nature. The Mahale Mountains National Park is home to many chimpanzees that inhabit the area. The national park was primarily created to protect these creatures and offer them a protected area in which they can live freely.

Travelers who are seeking unique Tanzania vacation experiences come to the park to explore its wild scenery, diverse location and observe its many chimpanzees that reside here. Including Mahale Mountains in your Tanzania vacation package is highly recommended.

5. Mafia Island

Zanzibar is renowned as being one of the most visited spots in East Africa. However, what regular tourists don’t know is there is a hidden jewel found just 160 km east of the island. Mafia Island is regarded as a magical place and is a must to visit as one of the most authentic things to do in Tanzania.

If you want to experience under the radar Tanzania, then Mafia Island is an ideal option. Feel the real tropical vibes of the Indian Ocean whilst spending your days in the idyllic sandbars and swimming in the crystal-clear waters.

Do you love observing unique sea life? Mafia Island is known for its diverse sea animals, so expect to see extraordinary fish and sea creatures such as sharks, dolphins, colorful clownfish, rays, and octopuses. This spot is heavenly for diving fans because it offers a truly original experience.

6. Kuza Cave

If you want to visit one of Zanzibar’s most precious secrets, the Kuza Cave is an ideal place for genuine wonder and interest. The Kuza Cave is an underground oasis, encapsulated by limestone caves that are centuries old with crystal-clear turquoise waters.

The Kuza cave doesn’t just offer swimming but an array of activities to enjoy surrounded by the caves themselves. It has a restaurant, an enormous garden to enjoy, cooking classes, drumming lessons and classes to learn Swahili. You will also have the chance to explore their peaceful nature preserve with a variety of wild animals to spot, including red colobus monkeys, colorful butterflies, and many bird species – all of which are located in the vicinity of the cave.

Kuza Cave is among the best things to do in Tanzania, so consider it for your adventure.

7. Shifting Sand Dunes in Ngorongoro Crater

The miraculous sand dunes in Ngorongoro Crater are an unexpected sight to see but they will definitely take your breath away. The crescent-shaped sand dunes are a part of the savannah, which is close to Olduvai Gorge and the Serengeti National Park. In comparison with the land surrounding the dunes, the sand is remarkably black. That’s because volcanic ash of the crater is significantly magnetized, which explains why particles tend to fall back into the sand rather than being blown away by the wind.

Local Maasai people say a sacred mountain called Ol Doinyo Lengai, widely regarded as the ‘Mountain of God’, is responsible for the shifting sand dunes. Because of this, the Maasai people, who gather on those dunes when there is a prolonged drought, consider them sacred.

If you are looking for authentic things to do in Tanzania, consider the shifting sand dunes in Ngorongoro Crater.
