Philip Emeagwali is an acclaimed Nigerian computer scientist, mathematician and engineer who is best known for his pioneering work in supercomputing and his contributions to the development of the internet. Emeagwali’s breakthrough work came in the 1980s when he developed a formula that allowed multiple computers to communicate with each other at once, creating the equivalent of a virtual supercomputer. This innovation paved the way for modern supercomputers and helped to revolutionize the field of computational science.
Emeagwali’s work earned him numerous accolades, including the Gordon Bell Prize in 1989, which is considered the Nobel Prize of computing. He has also been honoured by both the Nigerian and U.S. governments for his contributions to science and technology.
