Popular Marugbo soup gains international recognition with a new phase from 25 years old Afrocentric Chef; Alexander Adegboye.
Born in Ilaje, LGA of Ondo State, and raised in Ikale L.G.A of the same state, Alexander Adegboye is a Nigerian chef with an unimaginable passion for Nigerian cuisine, since he discovered his passion for cooking at the age of 17, Alexander joined the train to set Nigerian cuisine on a global standard, this young Nigerian Chef has a story worth emulating by many young aspiring chefs in Nigeria.
From dropping out of high school for inability to pay school levies, to working at construction sites to earn a living as a teenager and upscaling to founding Nigeria’s first culinary e-commerce brand. In 2020 he wrote his first book “The Chef in You” an autobiography in which he shares the struggles he faced penetrating the culinary industry and followed with his second book “Assassinated Cuisine” a book which points out how much Nigerian cuisine has been assassinated by western culture and how we can pay the ransom to revive the assassinate cuisine.
Marugbo soup is a native soup common amongst several Yoruba states in Nigeria. Generally known as “black soup”, Marugbo is native to the Ikale-Ilaje tribe of Ondo state but consumed by several other ethnic groups. Marugbo soup has been said to aid detoxification and also post-partum healing among many of its health benefits.
According to its direct translation; MARUGBO is said to have been coined out of the popular Yoruba phrase “AMARUGBO TA KEBE” which colloquially means “Something that makes the aged jump to their feet or Cell Revitalizer” This phrase is following the anti-ageing properties of the soup. Hence when you consume it, it revitalises your cell.
Over the years, this soup has been consumed on an occasional basis because of its high cost of production and its increased production time. The soup is said to traditionally feature over fifteen to seventeen ingredients to achieve a rich and spicy version, Chef Alexander with a mantle to restore the glory of Nigerian cuisine has come to realise that so many of our traditional cuisines are going into extension and are set to restore as many as he can by bringing them to the palate of Nigerians in a new dimension with every possible means.
With his many years of experience in the culinary industry, Chef Alexander has created a Ready-to-cook version of Marugbo Soup which cuts production time down by approximately 2 hours with his introduction of ready-to-cook Marugbo soup spice.
Marugbo soup spice now sells across few cities across the world.
